Green Home Headquarters was born when a young couple in a Raleigh, NC suburb decided to do something everyday and ordinary: paint our master bathroom.  The plan, of course, was to drive to the local hardware store and buy some paint and supplies.  Before we left for the store, however, we got to talking. The conclusion we reached was that we were simply unsatisfied with the prospect of spending our hard earned money on paint that would release volatile organic compounds (VOC's) into the air we breathe. You see, we had read a few articles about the real danger of using products that contain these irritants within the home.

We had heard of no- and low-VOC paint, and we set off on a mission to find it.  We scoured the shelves of hardware stores and do-it-yourself centers.  The result?  (Say it with us): Zippo. Zilch. Nada.

We came home non-plussed and began to search the Internet.  We were able to find it there, but at exorbitant shipping costs and with limited color choices.  Not to mention the disadvantage of being able to see and touch the product in person, compare prices, and speak with someone who is knowledgeable about it.  You know, the kinds of things one does when they are actually attempting to make an informed purchase.  For a couple on a budget, this is an absolute must, so ordering a product "as is" from the Internet was not an attractive option to us.  Soon, we realized this problem applied to not only paint, but also to other natural home products that we might want to use for renovation projects in the future.  What we needed was a local store that specialized in green home products, plain and simple.

And then it hit us: rather than wait for someone to come along and fill that need for us, why not do it ourselves?  The rest, as they say, is history-- and we're still in the process of making it.  We will openly admit to you that we are far from green living experts, but we are learning more every day.  Our hope is that you will feel inspired and motivated to join us on our journey toward green, sustainable living.  Through the blog on this website, we'll document our progress as we plan and start to implement our business.  We'll provide frequent updates about location (yet to be decided!) and when the grand opening will happen.

Please feel free to email us for any reason.  Perhaps you'll want to share green living information or ask for it.  Maybe you're a local business owner, and you want to network.  Or even if you just want to hang out or go hiking; we're always looking for new friends!

We look forward to seeing you at Green Home Headquarters soon!

Now, the basic facts:

Green Home Headquarters was started in the summer of 2007 by Anna and Jake Howland.

Anna received her bachelors degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2003 and has been busy working for a book publisher in Raleigh, NC as the Publishing Coordinator.  She is passionately interested in personal health, which includes the foods we eat and the products we use in our home.

Jake graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2002 and immediately took a job in Morrisville, NC as an analytical chemist to be near Chapel Hill (I wonder why?).  He has been there working as a scientist in pharmaceuticals, specifically inhaled drug delivery formulations, ever since.  He is the self proclaimed do it yourselfer and very determined to learn everything he can about green building principles.  He has cleaned out the library's green living book display several times over.

We both believe that our complementary interests and talents will serve us well into the future, as we pursue our common dream.
